Abstract
In this study, possibilities and results of applying DNR based instruction, which has been developed for teaching and learning mathematics, for gifted students in teaching and learning sciences are investigated. In accordance with this purpose, an answer is sought to the research question `May DNR based instruction be used for determining and developing scientific ways of understanding and ways of thinking of gifted students in science education?`. DNR based instruction is a theoretical framework that enables students to develop conceptual knowledge thanks to problem solving. DNR stands for initials of principles of Duality, Necessity and Repeated-Reasoning which comprise it. Duality explains close relationship between ways of understanding and ways of thinking, Necessity explains student's intellectual need for every subject taught himself/herself while Repeated-Reasoning explains internalization, organization and re-understanding of knowledge. Sample of the study is constituted by 3 secondary school students who are attending Erzurum Cevat Dursunoğlu Science and Art Center (BİLSEM) and have been determined to be gifted (intelligence test score 130 and over) by WISC-R test made beforehand. Data has been acquired through SDT (Status Determination Test) developed by the researcher, semi-structured interviews, individual student reports. By means of Status Determination Test (SDT) and semi-structured interviews, ways of understanding and ways of thinking the students had before the implementation are specified. Evolution and development of students have been observed by applying DNR based instruction for six weeks, after implementation data acquired has been presented in detail. Descriptive analysis out of qualitative analysis methods has been employed for analyzing data obtained through the study. In the light of data acquired through the study, students generally used external proof schemes while making explanations as well as their ways of understanding they had prior to implementation were inadequate and superficial. After implementation ways of understanding reached a scientific level while proof schemes they preferred when making explanations reached the level of analytic proof schemes. In the last part of the study, data obtained has been associated to previous studies and suggestions have been made for future studies.
