Abstract
In this thesis, we consider the problem of purchasing a commodity with a fluctuatingmarket price so as to maximize its profit from selling it over two selling season.Over the primary season, the market price evolution is described by the GeometricBrownian Motion and we describe the demand process as a Poisson Process. Moreoverdemand and price is independent during this season. Over the secondary sellingseason, demand depends on the price the firm assigns. Considering the salvage valuein place of the secondary market, we develop a mathematical model and find a closedform of solution. For the general model, we model the secondary market demand asa linear model and first solve optimization problem of maximizing the revenue fromthe secondary market. Then, we combine two selling seasons and model the problemfor maximizing the total expected profit. In addition, we perform a numerical studyto investigate how the optimal quantity and the optimal profit values depend on theprice process parameters. We also test the performance of the optimal policy againstthe policy that ignores the volatility of the price.
