Abstract
Social gender stereotyping can provoke physical, psychological and economical disturbance of women particularly in patriarchal societies. Increasing violence against women in Turkey are mainly because of the developed judgement patterns concerning social gender stereotyping. Violence against women has negative impacts both for an individual and the society. Endevours and plans of institutions, non-governmental organizations and governments draw significant attention. However, as the statistics indicate the continuous raise of violence against women, laws and other related activities seem insufficient. Education, on the other hand, is one of the primary institution to solve a social problem in time. For that specific reason, education has the capability to promote the societal change regarding negative judgement patterns for social gender stereotyping. Sociology which was accepted as a social science discusses both the violence and social gender stereotyping. This thesis emphasizes the role and mission of sociology class at the secondary education to decrease and minimize the violence against women as well as other various negative impacts of social gender stereotyping. In accordance with this objective, literature research has been made and the problem has clearly put forth. Subsequently, sociology course book was scrutinized from a feminist perception and an interview was held with sociology lectures at secondary education regarding the efficiency of sociology classes specifically for social gender education. Results indicate that the existing version of sociology classes are insufficient. At the conclusion of this research, opinions and suggestions for the defined problem has elaborated.
