Abstract
ABSTRACT In this study, the effect of high temperatures on the physical and mechanical properties of high strength mortar was investigated. Specimens were heated up to elevated temperatures ( 300, 600, 900°C ) without loading. After exposed to these temperatures, the residual physical and mechanical properties, such as the modulus of elasticity, flexural strength, compresive strength, diffusion constant and water absorption of the specimens were determined. The main test parameters involved were the maximum temperature, the rate of heating, the time of exposure at the maximum temperature, and the graphite content in the mixture. The exposure of high strength mortar to such temperatures resulted in a noticable reduction in its strength, especially in the range 300 - 900°C. In general, fast heated specimens showed better results than slow heated ones and the specimens that are exposed to the maximum temperature for a shorter period of time showed better residual properties. Considering the mechanical properties, the specimens with 5 percent graphite by weight of cement content showed better results than the specimens with no graphite content.
