Abstract
IV ABSTRACT In the design of steel structures, limit state concept of analysis refers to maximum capacity of members. When the ultimate strength is reached, the whole structure or part of it transforms into a mechanism. The model of collapse mechanism depends on structural continuity, boundary conditions, and local stability criteria. This design philosophy requires that, the loads and material properties of frame elements be multiplied by corresponding load and resistance factors, in order to fix effectively the reliability as a constant for all similar structural elements and to recover for all uncertainties of both the resistance and the load effects. In that context, the objective of this study is to investigate, the differences and to compare the design equations, proposed by Turkish standards TSE 4561 for the plastic design of steel structures in October 1985, with the other limit state standards. The two limit state specifications which are used as reference materials are Common Unified Rules for Steel Structures Eurocode-3 and Load and Resistance Factor Design LRFD86. In order to achieve this, a sample section is chosen and the capacity of the same section is calculated for different types of structural elements via strength formulas proposed by the three specifications. The results obtained are discussed in commentary sections which appear at the end of the each discussion topic. This research is intended to form a background information for further studies in establishing an harmonized design basis with other codes covering the same technical matters and updating the current Turkish design codes and specifications for steel structures.
