Abstract
IV ABSTRACT Ih this work, a mathematical programming model for scheduling the operations of a batch processing chemical plant, capable to handle all possible deterministic variations in the set up and operation times of the batch operations is developed. The deterministic model is further generalized to also capture the uncertainties introduced by the probabilistic behavior of set-up and operation times during the plant operations. This generalization is realized by assuming that the set-up and operation times vary according to given probability distributions. It is further shown that this general probabilistic model can be reduced to the deterministic model, once the probability distribution functions used to model the random variations are defined. The MINLP (Mixed Integer Non-Linear Programming) arising from the model is linearized and the resulting MILP (Mixed Integer Linear Programming) is solved using the CPLEX 2.1 software to obtain an optimum solution maximizing the operational plant profits. The solution gives the optimum expected utilization of the equipment and production schedule (plan) that maximizes the overall expected profit for the specified process objectives. A prototype user-friendly software package named `System Organizer` is also developed as a result of this work, which generates the MILP. `System Organizer` is designed and implemented in C++ for PC's working in the WINDOWS environment. Solutions for 21 batch processing plants with varying physical set-ups and product recipes are given using the `System Organizer` algorithm suggested in this thesis.
