Abstract
IV ABSTRACT In this thesis, some new adaptive filtering algorithms, obtained by modifying the ordinary Least-Mean-Square (LMS) algorithm, have been evaluated by comparing them with each other, and with the LMS, in both one-dimensional and two-dimensional cases, taking the conventional LMS algorithm as the benchmark. The five new LMS based algorithms are taken into consideration : Normalized LMS (NLMS), New Steepest Descent (NSD), Modified NSD (NSDM), Least-Mean-Fourth (LMF) and its family, and Karni&Zeng. Adaptive recursion formulas of the algorithms are given and the factors which influence their performance are discussed. Based on the already developed two-dimensional adaptive lattice LMS and NLMS algorithms, the two-dimensional adaptive lattice extensions of the one-dimensional NSD, NSDM, LMF, and Karni&Zeng algorithms are introduced. It is observed from computer simulations that if the noise is Gaussian, it is more advantageous to use the NSDM algorithm in the one-dimensional case, and one of the following three two-dimensional adaptive lattice algorithms in the two-dimensional case : NLMS, LMF or NSDM. On the other hand, if the noise is of square-wave type, then the use of the LMF algorithm provides significant improvement over the use of other algorithms.
