Abstract
IV ABSTRACT RADIATIVE HEAT TRANSFER AND EXTINCTION LIMITS IN COUNTERFLOW DIFFUSION HYDROGEN/AIR FLAME Gas phase radiation effects on the extinction of a counterflow diffusion hydrogen and air flame having stagnation plane flow geometry are investigated using a statistical narrowband radiation model. Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and water vapor are used as the radiative participating media. General information about the flames, classification of flames, and flame extinction phenomena is provided for serving the basic understanding of the subject. Following the definition of the problem, mathematical formulation is provided. Several radiative heat transfer calculation models are discussed and S-N discrete ordinates method is selected and explained thoroughly. Numerical solution technique is discussed with the difficulties encountered during their application. Giving the basic working principles of the currently available source code is followed by the discussion of various algorithms that we have developed to increase the computational efficiency of the code. These algorithms are used to solve the flame problem we have introduced before. A considerable increase in computational speed is obtained. To observe the effects of a parameter on the flame, both flame structure and reaction mechanism have to be investigated carefully before and after introduction of this parameter into the problem. Therefore, after explaining the structure and reaction mechanism of a reference case, a different flame parameter is either added or changed for each time. These parameters are stretch rate, carbon dioxide dilution rate and radiative heat transfer. It has been shown that, although radiative heat loss is ineffective at high stretch rates, it becomes significant while the stretch rate is lowered. Flame radiation reduces the maximum temperature, narrows the flame by increasing the heat loss from the system, and eventually leads the flame to extinguish. Carbon dioxide dilution increases the heat loss by various ways while elongating the tail of the flame.
