Abstract
ABSTRACT EARTHQUAKE DESIGN OF REINFORCED MASONRY BUILDINGS A detailed analytical investigation of the earthquake design of reinforced masonry buildings is presented. The Uniform Building Code 1997 of the USA is utilised as the basis of design procedure for the masonry buildings. After a thorough discussion of the theoretical aspects, the procedure is illustrated on a case study involving a six-storey reinforced masonry building. The finite element analysis of the building is also performed by means of the SAP2000 computer package program. In addition, the cost analysis of the example reinforced masonry building is presented and compared with both unreinforced masonry and reinforced concrete frame buildings. The important role of the reinforced masonry infill walls within the reinforced concrete frame buildings is also studied. For this purpose, a four-storey moment resisting reinforced concrete frame system is selected as an example and it is analysed under the earthquake loading for three different cases; a) frame alone without infill walls, b) frame with unreinforced infill walls and c) frame with reinforced infill walls. In each case, a push-over method of loading is applied until the first hinge is developed in the frame with no infill walls, and until the cracking level of shear stress is reached in the infill walls, with or without reinforcement. In the experimental part of the study, the shear strength of the mortar in a typical hollow brick wall system is determined instrumentally at site, for three different cases.
