Abstract
IV ABSTRACT FACING STABILITY OF GEOSYNTHETIC REINFORCED SOIL RETAINING WALLS The use of dry-stacked concrete blocks in geosynthetic reinforced soil retaining wall construction has gained popularity throughout the world and is becoming widespread in Turkey. The facing consisting of block layers with geosynthetic placed between the layers provides an aesthetically pleasing, cost-effective alternative that is easy to construct. Facing systems used vary between countries and according to the application. Facing blocks used in Turkey are precast hollow rectangular concrete blocks. The two holes in these blocks are filled with a chosen soil during construction. Generally, geotextiles are used as the geosynthetic material. This facing system is kept upright by the factional forces developing between concrete blocks and the geosynthetic reinforcement. This study aimed to investigate the strength parameters of the connection formed. A simple apparatus was developed to conduct a connection test. In this test, the tensile load applied on geotextile was increased until failure at different normal loads. The test was performed for four cases: with holes left empty, and with holes filled with gravel, sand or road fill. Apparent minimum connection strength and the angle of friction were calculated for each case. The results were comparatively evaluated. The use of infills was justified for several reasons. Firstly, they provided additional normal stress, automatically increasing friction. Secondly, all infills tested increased the overall angle of friction, with gravel achieving the highest result.
