Abstract
IV ABSTRACT IDENTIFICATION OF LINEAR STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS USING EARTHQUAKE INDUCED VIBRATION DATA In this study we discuss various issues in modeling, simulation, and system identification, and investigate the application of a least-squares based system identification algorithm to structural systems. This thesis includes four important applications. A four-storey model of a building in 2D was selected for first application. The aim of the first application is to discuss system identification for three different cases. This discussion includes that the algorithm used in identification process changes according to input A one-dimensional four degrees of freedom linear dynamic system is selected for second application. This application includes discussing detection of structural change. In this application, there are twenty investigated test cases including different noise levels (5 per cent and 20 per cent). The possibility of damage existence was estimated from the statistical distributions of the stiffness parameters of the damaged and undamaged structure, then we evaluated whether structural damage has occurred or not. One of the most important problems in identification is that the modeling of a structural system may not be easy due to the large number of degrees of freedom, so discussing reduced order modeling is inevitable in this thesis. In third application, a one-dimensional ten degrees of freedom linear dynamic system was used to investigate model reduction by applying ten different cases. The fourth application includes an eight-storey building in 3D in order to discuss detection of structural change for reduced order models. All analysis are conducted using SAP2000 (1998), structural analysis problem. Because accelerations are generally recorded during an earthquake, and velocities and displacements are necessary in identification process, this acceleration records were integrated with respect to time in order to obtain velocity and displacement records in the last application.
