Abstract
IV ABSTRACT DEFLECTION BASED DESIGN OF SHORING SYSTEMS A major concern for projects involving deep excavation is the impact of construction-related ground movements on adjacent buildings and utilities. The amount and severity of excavation-related damage depends on the support system type and its performance, ground conditions, and construction activities. Predicting the magnitude and distribution of these movements has significant importance in the design process, since these predictions are utilized to estimate the tolerance limit of the structures to the induced deformations. To provide a tool to predict the amount of displacement associated with supported excavations and its effects, a semi-numerical procedure and finite element model analysis for supported excavation are present in this thesis. In addition to this, this thesis also covers the summary of previous studies and their results on the topic. The previous studies results are handled to adjust the calculated values of displacement. A finite element analysis allows an engineer to model all aspects of excavation that cause stress change in soil: wall installation, dewatering, cycles of excavation, bracing and brace removal, surcharges, and preloading of anchors. Finite element predictions, however, have uncertainties related to soil properties, support system details, and construction procedures. To diminish these uncertainties, the various component of the problem and the relevant properties of the soil and shoring system should be accurately defined. Plaxis Finite Element Code for Soil and Rock Analysis Program is used to modeling and design of the Case Study - Hema Industry Diamond of Istanbul Shoring Project in detail. The displacement of shoring system is measured by means of inclinometers and it is compared with calculated values.
