Abstract
ABSTRACT This thesis aims at developing ELT materials from newspapers and magazines for classroom use. There are two hypotheses to be proved. First, using such materials increases motivation and second it improves reading skills. The data have been collected from the experimental studies done in the Department of Basic English of METU. In Chapter 1, the purpose and scope of the study are clarified. The hypothesis, the limitations of the study and the assumptions are stated. Chapter 2 includes a review of literature. In Chapter 3, the method of data collection is presented and a model to using newspaper materials in class for ELT is suggested. In chapter 4, the suggested methods are given and newspaper materials and suggested activities are presented. Chapter 5 includes the application of the suggested model. A manual for the teacher and a booklet for the students are presented in detail. The mini-test applied in the class and the analysis of the midterm results are also given. Chapter 6, the last chapter, gives the summary of the study and the conclusion. -in-The thesis includes four appendices: 1.
