Export instability: the case of Turkey

Abstract

ÖZET Bu tezin amacı ihracat istikrarsızlığını ve bunun nedenlerini incelemektir. Çalışma dört bölümden oluşmaktadır. Birinci bölümde, konuyla ilgili bugüne kadar yapılan çalışmalar özetlenmiş, ikinci bölümde Türkiye ekonomisi, ihracat yapısı dikkate alınarak incelenmiştir. Üçüncü ve dördüncü bölümde ise, Türkiye'nin ihracat istikrarsız lığı ve nedenleri, alternatif endeksler ve ekonometrik analizler kullanılarak araştırılmıştır. -iii-

ABSTRACT The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the export instability of Turkey in general and to examine the causes of export instability in line with the peculiarities of the export structure of Turkey in particular. The study is divided into four chapters. Chapter one reviews the existing literature to provide the perspective for the study and to give the existing arguments in this field. Chapter two provides a picture of Turkish economy with special reference to export structure. Chapter three is concerned with Turkey's export instability and the causes of export instability. The geographical concentration and the commodity concentration hypotheses of export instability are also studied in this chapter. Chapter four investigates whether commodity concentration and geographic concentration are satisfactory in explaining the export instability of Turkey. Simple and multiple regressions are used for this purpose. -ii-
