Abstract
The expectations of the study were based on the model of the three main pathogenic factors : high Body Mass Index (BMI), cultural desire for slimness and personal and/or family psychopathology, involved in the development of the eating disorders as proposed by Lee (1993). Different approaches trying to account for the development of eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia nervosa were presented. The measures used in the inpresent study to represent the three parts of the model were the Mult i -dimensional Perfectionism Scale (MPS), a set of questions designed to measure perceived pressures from significant others regarding the weight status of subjects and BMI measures. The scale used to assess pathology was the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-40). Based on the literature gender differences were expected. No correlations between the dimensions of the MPS and of the EAT-40 were found. Sequential regression analysis revealed partial support for the model. Perceived pressures from the friend of the same sex regarding weight status predicted the EAT-40 factor dieting for male and female subjects. Weight dissatisfaction was another predictor for the female group and other- oriented perfectionism for the male group. The EAT-40.factor vomiting/purging was predicted by family income and perceived pressures from the mother for female subjects. The results of the present study were discussed in light of gender differences, the limitations were put forward and directions for future research in related subjects were offered.
