Abstract
Anahtar Kelimeler: Korku, deprem, çocuklar, korku azaltma yöntemleri. vııı ABSTRACT THE EFFECT OF AN ACTIVITY BASED COGNITIVE FEAR REDUCTION PROGRAM ON THE FEARS OF EARTHQUAKE VICTIM CHILDREN Karaırmak, Özlem M.S., Department of Educational Sciences Supervisor: Prof.Dr. Gül Aydın June, 2001, 152 pages The purpose of the study, which is comprised of two phases, is threefold: first, to describe ten most frequent fears of earthquake victim children, second, to test whether a difference exits between the fears of earthquake exposed and non-exposed elementary school students and third, to examine the effect of an activity based cognitive fear reduction program on the fears of earthquake victim children. The sample of the first phase of the study consists of 266 students from Polatlı Hikmet Uluğbay Primary Education School while the subjects of the second iiiphase were twenty students, drawn from a total sample of 119 earthquake victim students. The Fear Survey Schedule was used to collect the survey data. In the first phase of the study, descriptive statistics were used to summarize data and Multivariate Analysis of Variance was employed to the Fear Survey Schedule scores of the subjects to compare the fears of earthquake exposed and non-exposed elementary school students. The results showed that the ten most frequent fears in the exposed group were: the fear of mother's death, fear of father's death, fear of hell, fear of being trapped in the debris, fear of recurrence of earthquake, fear of death of the family members, fear of earthquake, fear of separation from parents, fear of own death and fear of fire, respectively. The results of the study revealed significant gender differences regarding the `earthquake related fears`, `fear of reminders`, `fear of death and separation` and `fear of injury` in both groups, with girls being consistently more fearful than the boys. Significant differences were also found concerning `fear of reminders` and `fear of death and separation` in the exposed and the non-exposed group, with exposed group's subjects being more fearful than the non-exposed ones. In the second phase of the study, an experimental design with one control and one treatment group and two measurements (pre and post) were used to investigate the effectiveness of an activity based cognitive fear reduction program on the fears of earthquake victim children. `Activity Based Cognitive Fear Reduction Program ` was introduced to subjects over a period of 9 ivsessions. The sessions were held three times a week and lasted 90 minutes. Contrary to the expectation the results indicated that `Activity Based Cognitive Fear Reduction Program ` did not lessen the fears of earthquake victim children. Keywords: Fear, earthquake, children, fear reduction methods.
