Abstract
ABSTRACT This study aims at giving language teachers a new scope of pronunciation teaching by emphasizing the significance of pronunciation^ which is a very much neglected area in foreign language learning and teaching» and the necessity of a good pronunciation in the oral communication, by discussing the factors affecting the teaching and learning of pronunciation, by constrasting the sound patterns of English and Turkish both at segmental and suprasegmental level, and by analyzing the pronunciation errors, together with the processes and constraints affecting the acquistion of FL phonology. Both contrastive and error analysis makes it possible for language teachers to know what teaching point they must concentrate on and to develop their own teaching strategies» To remedy pronunciation errors, new techniques have been developed and some suggestions have been made to solve the pronunciation problems, providing the language teachers with various types of pronunciation drills and practice materials have been supplied for the betterment of pronunciation. To make pronunciation teaching more attractive, games, roleplays, or simulations and drama techniques have been illustrated and finally various types of tests which can also be used as problem-solving exercises have been developed.
