Abstract
ÖZET Bu çalışma, Building Strategies isimli ders kitabının okuma ile ilgili sunduğu malzemelere dikkat çekme ve sözü edilen kitabın okuma ile ilgili kısımlarını pekiştirmek için destekleyici okuma parçaları ve alıştırmaları hazırlamak amacıyla yapılmıştır. Building Strategies, Brian Abbs ve Ingrid Freebairn tarafından yazılmış ve Gazi Üniversitesinde kullanılmakta olan bir ders kitabıdır. Çalışmanın ilk bölümü, problem ve çalışmanın amacıyla ilgilidir. İkinci bölüm, İngilizce öğretiminin tarihçesinin kısa bir özetiyle başlar ve dil öğretiminde geçmişten günümüze yaygın olarak kullanılan metod ve yaklaşımlarla ilgili bir araştırmayla devam eder. Üçüncü bölüm, okumanın ne anlama geldiğini, amacını, basamaklarını ve çeşitlerini de kapsayan, konuyla ilgili daha önce yapılan çalışmaları sunmayı hedeflemektedir. Aynı bölümde, ayrıca uygun okuma parçalarının seçiminde göz önünde bulundurulması gereken önemli hususlar ve öğrencilerin okuma becerilerinin geliştirilmesinde güdülemenin rolü vurgulanmaktadır. Dördüncü Bölüm, Building Strategies kitabının özellikle kitabın içerdiği okuma malzemeleri ve alıştırmaları yönüyle analizinin ve değerlendir mesinin yapılmasıyla başlar ve ilgili kitabın okuma bölümlerine yapısal ve kelime bilgisi yönüyle olduğu kadar öğrencilerin okuma becerilerini geliştirmek amacıyla da hazırlanan destekleyici okuma parçalarının ve alıştırmalarının sunulmasıyla devam eder. Kitabın her ünitesi için iki tane okuma alıştırması veya parçası hazırlanmıştır. Çalışmanın son bölümünde ise sonuç bölümü yer almaktadır. u ABSTRACT This study was carried out to draw attention to the reading materials in Building Strategies, and to devise supplementary reading materials to consolidate the book in question. Building Strategies is a coursebook written by Brian Abbs and Ingrid Freebairn and is used by the students at Gazi University. The purpose of the first chapter is to explain the problem and aim of the study. The second chapter begins with a brief history of ELT and then continues with the comment on the place of reading in major methods and approaches. Chapter three attempts to give the review of literature relevant to reading including what reading is, purpose in reading, stages and kinds of reading. The criteria essential for the selection of suitable reading materials and the place of motivation in developing the students'reading skills are also reviewed in the last sections of this chapter. Chapter four deals with the analysis and evaluation of Building Strategies especially in terms of its reading parts.This chapter, then, presents the supplementary reading materials devised to compensate for the reading activities in Building Strategies and the last chapter of our study includes the conclusion.
