Abstract
Located in the southeastern corner of the Aegean Sea, the island of Rhodes has been targeted throughout the history due to its strategic position by the states which aimed to be effective powers in the Mediterranean Sea. The Ottoman Empire was one such state which fought to capture the island as it aimed to be a sovereign power on sea as well as on land. The island was conquered during under Suleiman the Magnificent and remained under the sovereignty of the Ottoman Empire for 390 years. Following the conquest, the Ottomans not only established political power on the island, but also brought Anatolian folk culture, and therefore, Rhodian folk culture has become a part of Anatolian culture. Folk culture products reflect the national identity and represent an integration of any material and nonmaterial characteristics created by individuals in a society. They reflect the world view, lifestyle, moral values, manners, customs, and traditions of the society they are produced in. This study aimed to determine the folk culture elements specific to the Rhodian Turks in the Rhodes' geography and to enable the transference of these elements to the next generations to prevent them from fading away.
