Abstract
In this thesis, it was purposed to comprehend the dynamic response of beams andframes which are subjected to moving point loads. The finite element method andnumerical time integration method (Newmark method) are employed in the vibrationanalysis. The effect of the speed of the moving load on the dynamic magnificationfactor which is defined as the ratio of the maximum dynamic displacement at thecorresponding node in the time history to the static displacement when the load is atthe mid ? point of the structure is investigated. The effect of the spring stiffnessattached to the frame at the conjunction points of beam and columns are alsoevaluated. Computer codes written in Matlab are developed to calculate the dynamicresponses. The results obtained from the Matlab codes are compared with the resultsof a commercial finite element package Ansys and good agreement is found.Dynamic responses of the engineering structures and critical load velocities can befound with high accuracy by using the finite element method. Keywords: Frame vibrations, finite element method, moving load, dynamicmagnification factor.
