Abstract
V ABSTRACT The study area is located in the western part of the Black Sea Region and covers an area of approximately 7000 km2 in sheets Ereğli F24, F25, F26, Adapazarı G24, G25, G26, H24, H25, H26, Zonguldak F27, F28, Bolu G27, G28, H27, H28 with a scale of 1/100,000. The epiclastic and volcanoclastic rocks, which were formed the Late Paleocene - Eocene `Kusuri Formation`, outcropted at East Black Sea region and has been investigated and sequences divided into three different parts: lower, middle and upper parts. Lower part consists of deep marine turbidites, conglomerates, sandstones and shales, middle part consists of lithic tuffs, tuff brecias, volkanoclastics, sandstones-siltstones and eruption volcanism product pyroclastics. Upper part contains many alternation of shallow marine sandstone-claystone, calcarenites. Depending on the descent of Neotethis sea's oceanic crust in the northern direction beneath the Pontides in Late Cretaceous, an accretionary prism and arc volcanism were developed on Pontides. The center region of this basin was filled by the Late Paleocene turbidites, conglomerates, sandstones and shale, which formed the lower level of the deposit. In Eocene, the activity of the Late Cretaceous arc volcanism on the accretionary prism to the southern of the study area was caused to the basin to be located between two arcs. The volcanoclastic, pyroclastic rocks belong to middle level and shallow marine epiclastic rocks belonging to upper level were deposited in this basin between two arcs. In this period, the basin become more shallow from west through east and south through north. The volcanoclastic and pyroclastic rocks of middle level has material from Eocene arc volcanism, shallow marine sandstone, claystone abd calcarenite of upper level has material from all the units outcropted before Lutetian.
