Abstract
Ti6Al4V, which is used as biocompatible material, is preferred in many medical applications and medical devices. Despite of being biocompatible and having properties like high corrosion resistance, undesired value of abrasion resistance and hydrophobic characteristics account for some of the disadvantages of titanium and its alloys. In order to overcome these disadvantages, a surface treatment with a sol-gel technique has been applied. TiO2 and B doped TiO2 thin films were coated on Ti6Al4V. SEM and XRD analysis of the samples were performed after the applied surface treatments. The hardness of thin films formed on the material surface was characterized by micro hardness device and the surface roughness was determined by 3D profilometer. After coating, open circuit potential (OCP), potential electrodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) test results were obtained for electrochemical analysis of materials. Surface wear tests were carried out and the wear rates were determined by 3D profilometer. After the tests were performed, the highest wear resistance and the corrosion resistance were shown by boron doped TiO2 thin film coated specimens and the strongest hydrophobic characteristics were shown by the TiO2 thin film coated specimen. Tribological and electrochemical properties were improved by boron doping on the material surface while hydrophobicity improvement was obtained by coating TiO2 thin film without doping.
