Abstract
In this study, the adsorption of Cu(II) and Zn(II) heavy metal ions and acid blue 113, crystal violet, methyl red dyes in single systems and Cu(II) ion-dye stuffs in binary systems on chitin and chitosan was investigated. The results were given in terms of initial adsorption rates, amount of adsorbed material per unit weight of adsorbent at equilibrium and adsorption efficiency. The compliance of equilibrium removal of heavy metal and dye stuff to adsorption isotherms and kinetic models was investigated and the values of adsorption parameters were determined. In the heavy metal ion adsorption experiments, the highest adsorption efficiency value was achieved with the value of % 90.17 in the adsorption of copper(II) onto chitosan at pH 5 and 25 mg/l initial concentration. In the dye adsorption experiments the highest efficiency value was achieved in the adsorption of crystal violet onto chitin at 100 mg/l initial dye concentration with the value of % 92.3. The adsorption of Cu(II) ions in which the highest adsorption efficiency had been obtained was also investigated by using micropolymeric particules. In these studies, the effects of adsorbent amount and pH onto adsorption were investigated by using GDMA-MAA, GDMA-AMPS, HPMA-CL and TEA micropolymeric particules. In the two component systems of copper(II) ion-dye stuffs, the highest total adsorption efficiency was achieved in the adsorption of copper(II)-acide blue 113 system onto chitosan with the value of %92.11. The existence of copper(II) and crystal violet together in the adsorption medium caused synergetic effect for copper(II) and caused antagonistic effect for crystal violet comparing with their one component system adsorptions. In the adsorption of two component system of copper(II)-methyl red onto chitin and chitosan, synergistic effect was observed for methyl red.
