Abstract
Impingement jets are used cooling of gas turbine blades where cooling is needed, glass tempering, heat treatment of metals, drying of fabrics, paper, timber etc. in many industrial applications. In impingement jet jet cooling, higher heat transfer is obtained by using less fluid flow compared to other cooling methods. While single-impingement jet nozzles can provide sufficient cooling performance when the heating surface area is small, the use of impingement jet is required to achieve the desired cooling capacity as the heating area grows. In multiple nozzle applications, turbulence fluctuations in the interference zones increase and the fluent structure on the heat sink becomes more complex. Therefore, an experimental study is needed to determine the cooling load.In this thesis, impingement jet heat transfer characteristics in rectangular fin heat exchanger optimized by Taguchi method were analyzed by using experimental and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) package program ANSYS Fluent. Experimental study was carried out at different velocities for h/d = 2-4-6 distance between heat sink nozzle, d = 13-16-22 mm nozzle diameters. It was observed that the Reynolds number increased while the Nusselt number increased and therefore the heat transfer improved.. Results are expressed by Nu-Re correlations. When the results were analyzed, it was observed that numerical and experimental results were in a good agreement especially in low Reynolds numbers.
