Abstract
Any substance that is harmful to the environment, used and unwanted is defined as waste. Wastes due to reasons such as increasing population and developing technology have negative effects on both human health and environment. Electronic wastes (e-wastes) that have been broken, damaged, outdated or have completed their lifetime, are a type of solid waste and one of the largest known sources of heavy metals and organic pollutants. It is estimated that around 40 million tons of e-waste is generated each year in the world. The creation of landfills for such a large amount of e-waste not only reduces land use but also has an adverse economic impact on the country's economy.Although there are many studies in the literature on the use of wastes in geotechnical engineering, there are almost no studies in the field of geotechnics related to e-waste. Therefore, the aim of this study is to use e-waste in geotechnical engineering. For this purpose, the effect of e-waste on the Atterberg limits, unconfined compressive strength of fine-grained soil (CH) and the behavior of the e-waste at the end of the freeze-thaw cycles were investigated. The plastic parts obtained by removing the components on the computer mainboards was used as e-waste. The e-waste was grinded in the mill type grinder until the grain size was small enough. The Atterberg limits, unconfined compression test and freeze-thaw tests were performed in obtained samples by adding grinded e-waste to CH clay in different ratios (0.1%, 0.3%, 0.5%, 1% and 1.5% by dry weight). In the laboratory 3, 5 and 10 cycles of Freeze-thaw and unconfined compressive strength were performed with the samples obtained. As a result of laboratory tests, e-waste increases the liquid limit (wL) and plastic limit (wp) values of CH clay, It was also determined that unconfined compressive strength was positively affected and unconfined compressive strength decreased with increasing number of freeze-thaw cycles.
