Abstract
This study presents the performance analysis of an experimental R134a automotive heat pump (AHP) system driven by a diesel engine and utilizing the heat absorbed from the ambient air, engine coolant or exhaust gas. Besides that, the performance of the AHP system was compared with that of the baseline heating system, and the performance of system in the cooling mode was also presented. The performance of the AHP system for each heat source were evaluated by applying energy and exergy analyses to the system based on experimental data, and then compared with the performance of the system using other heat sources and with the performance of the baseline heating system. The performance parameters such as air temperature at the indoor coil outlet, heating capacity, coefficient of performance, increase in brake specific fuel consumption as function of the compressor speed, engine load and air temperatures at the inlets of the indoor and outdoor coils were presented graphically. In some tests, the supply air leaving the indoor coil was sent to the passenger compartment through a flexible air duct. Then, the compartment temperatures at different locations were measured and the performance parameters of the AHP system and the diesel engine were obtained for this case. The results show that the AHP system using engine coolant provided highest air temperatures at the outlet of the indoor coil in the first five minutes of the tests, which were performed at various speeds and engine loads. The AHP system causes an increase in brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) within the range of 4-54 at various engine loads. It was determined that the AHP system can be utilized to heat the passenger compartment until the coolant temperature rises to sufficiently high values, thus shortening the time interval in which the thermal comfort is obtained.
