Abstract
The use of polymer matrix composite materials in aerospace, aviation, defense, automotive and marine industries is more and more increasing. Abrasive water jet (AWJ), which is a non-traditional material machining method, has an important place in the machining of such materials. In this study, glass fiber reinforced vinyl ester composite plates were cut according to the Taguchi experimental design in various AWJ cutting parameters. According to Taguchi experimental design, the experimental parameters are standoff distance, abrasive mass flow rate, traverse rate, pressure and material thickness, which are determined at three levels. Top kerf width and surface roughnesses are examined to understand the cutting performance. Top kerf width was examined by optical microscope and surface roughness was examined by optical profilometer. ANOVA analysis was performed in accompanied by linear regression models and the main effects of all performance parameters were showed. According to all test results, the most effective test parameter of standoff distance was found. The levels of the optimum experimental parameters were determined and experiments were carried out according to the levels of these parameters. A predictive model was created. According to the levels of the optimum test parameters experimental and predicted results were compared and verifications were made.In the next stage, AWJ nozzle slope was given and the effect of different slope angles on the surface of the kerf was investigated. The cutting surface was completely scanned with optical profilometer and surface roughness was investigated. In all tests were showed positive effects on the surface roughness of 87.5° and 82.5° nozzle slope angles. Behaviors of the AWJ along kerf section were investigated by optical microscope. The effects of cutting performance on the kerf surfaces according to parameter and their levels was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).As a result, ASJ cutting performances of glass fiber reinforced vinyl ester composite plates were investigated, optimum parameters were determined and it was improved their performance with sloping cut.
