Abstract
In this study, respirable particulate matter samples were collected using Sioutas 5-stage cascade impactor in the working environments of six dental prosthetics laboratories (DPL) providing service in Kocaeli. The mass concentrations of particulate matters for five different size ranges (PM>2.5, PM1.0–2.5, PM0.5–1.0, PM0.25–0.5, and PM<0.25) and the concentrations of 28 elements in each particulate fraction were determined to assess the risks to the employees' health because of respiratory exposure to fine particulates and toxic and carcinogenic metals during dental prosthesis construction. This study found that the mean concentration and standard deviation of particulates in each size range for all the DPLs was 326 ± 306 μg/m3 for PM>2.5, 111 ± 77 μg/m3 for PM1.0-2.5, 53.8 ± 49 μg/m3 for PM0.5-1.0, 110 ± 178 μg/m3 for PM0.25-0.5, and 132 ± 139 μg/m3 for PM<0.25. This study also found that 60% of fine particulates, which posed risk to the employees' health in terms of their size, were smaller than 0.5 μm (PM0.5-0.25 and PM<0.25). The elemental analysis revealed that the trace elements in the highest concentrations in particle size of PM2.5 were Cr, Co, Ni, Zr, and Mo. The enrichment factors and correlation coefficients of the particulates were examined to determine the sources of elements. The fine particulates in the DPLs were found to be affected by the process of prosthesis construction. The result of the assessment related to the potential health risks showed that the total hazard index was 53 times the allowable value. The lifetime risk of developing cancer was calculated to be 2000 times more than the limit value. These results indicated that the most effective elements were Co, Cr, and Ni. Therefore, it was recommended that the employees of DPLs strictly comply with the occupational health measures.
