Abstract
Various materials are used as heat storage material in the systems where solar energyis stored as thermal energy. Generally, in air-fluid solar collectors, radiation energy isconverted into heat energy and the converted heat is transferred to the heat storagewith air. Storing is predicted to be efficient when stones are thought to be in goodcontact with air. However, the heat stores used in this way are generally designed asall the surfaces closed (in such a way that they can not directly receive the sunlight),and air is circulated around the stones to transfer energy. In this study, a heat storagesystem that stores solar energy as thermal energy was designed using basalt stones, water and a phase change material, paraffin wax. Unlike the classic designs in the heatstorage system a glass cover was used to take the sunlight directly from the southfacade. Thus, the effect of solar radiation which contacts with stones directly on theperformance of heat storage system has been investigated. In the designed heat storagesystem, the temperature of the stones can be maximum 46.6 ºC when the sun does notdirectly contact with the stones, and can be obtained maximum 56.8 ºC when the sunreaches the stones directly. Thus, 11.7% more energy can be stored in the heat storagesystem. Unlike conventional heat storage designs, the performance of the heat storagehas been investigated combining the high temperature holding advantage of phasechange material and water and the high heat transfer rate advantage of the stones(thanks to the excess of contact surface). It has been determined that it is possible tobenefit from the heat storage system supported with phase change material for a longerperiod and the energy can be stored up to 9.9% more.
