Abstract
Poly(ether ether ketone) is one of the semi crystalline high performance polymers. PEEK and its glass fiber (GF) and carbon fiber (CF) reinforced composites are widely used in automotive, aviation, biomedical industries due to their superior properties such as high thermal and chemical resistance, exceptional mechanical performance etc. However, some alterations occur in the composite properties due to the structural alterations at the fiber-matrix interface with the fiber addition to polymeric matrix. Structure of fiber-matrix interface can be change with the some kind of thermal processes and thus, performance of composite can be improved. In this study, quenching and thermal aging processes were applied to glass fiber and carbon fiber reinforced PEEK composites and effects of these processes on the tribological, thermomechanical, thermal and morphological properties were evaluated. For this purpose, abrasive wear test, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis were performed. Abrasive wear test results revealed that the highest wear rate were observed for CF reinforced composites, however thermal aging process decreased the wear rate of composites. It was observed from DSC analysis results that crystallinity rate of thermally aged composites increased. DMA results indicated that the best fiber-matrix interface adhesion was observed for thermally aged composites. SEM micrographs supported the other test results and showed that carbon fiber reinforced composites exhibited more wear rate and thermally aged composites exhibited less wear rate when compared to other kind of composites.
