Abstract
In this thesis, the importance of the recycling of several scrap metals from energy-saving,enyironmental and economic viewpoints was emphasized. The second section of this study deals with scrap iron and steel.lt describes technical considerations such as the sorts of scrap arising;i.e. home scrap (also called revert or circulating scrap),prompt industrial scrap and capital scrap, the physical and chemical characteristics of scrap and their effects on steelmaking, the sorting of scrap, assesing the optimum furnace load, the processing or preparation of scrap and methods of achieving this, the processing of some large sources of scrap-steel like automobile scrap, and the different kinds of machines which have been designed for processing scrap to enable it to be a proper secondary raw material for steelmaking. The comparison of scrap with direct-reduced iron has also been discussed. In addition to the technical aspects mentioned above.economic subjects like world scrap trade and factors affecting the price of scrap have been explainedlron and steel industry in Turkey as well as in the world have been reviewed with supplemental tables and figures as an integral part of the study. The third section deals with scrap-alurninium.lt explains the characteristics of primary and secondary aluminium production, the types and sources of the scrap, the sorting and processing of the scrap.the considerations for the design of a new aluminium recycling facility, etc. The fourth section, which mainly analyzes the scrap from copper and its alloys, also deals with other kinds of scrap metals. In the fifth section, the significance of the recycling of non-metal materials such as glass, paper, plastics, used tyres and electronic scrap was briefly pointed out The last section consists of overall conclusions which have emerged from the remarkable facts presented in the thesis. It is hoped that this master thesis which is one of the earliest studies in Turkey on recycling of scrap-metal will partly fill a gap in this field and which will be useful to both the Turkish Industry and the academic studies that will be done from now on.
