Abstract
VIII SUMMARY In this study, the effect of cellulose on the removal of sulfate ions in textile wastewater containing indigo dyeing material, by chemical precipitation methods has been investigated. During textile dyeing after the reduction of indigo dye (C6H10O2N2) with sodium hydrosulfite (Na2S204) in caustic soda medium, Na2SOs and Na2S04 are formed. After that, Na2S03 converts to Na2S04 by oxidation. Thus, after the dyeing process the wastewater is found to contain a high concentration of sulfate ions. Before the dyeing process cotton tissue is treated with sud caustic solution and thereby wastewater also contains cellulose. Sulfate salts containing wastewaters create considerable harm to the sewer systems by reacting with the concrete to form highly expanding ettringite (3CaO.Al203.3CaS04.31H20). Beside this, the compounds that are formed from the decomposition of sulfate by bacteria result in further corrosion and foul odor. Because of these effects the sulfate ion concentration in wastewaters is restricted to 1700 mg/1 according to the İSKİ standards. By the experimental studies the effect of cellulose in the medium during the precipitation of sulfate by the addition of lime was investigated and it was found that cellulose material had an inhibitory effect on the precipitation of sulfate as CaSCX by the addition of lime.
