Abstract
ÖZET 17 Ağustos 1999 tarihinde meydana gelen deprem felaketinden yaklaşık on beş milyon insan çeşitli derecelerde etkilenmiştir. ABSTRACT Fifteen million people have been effected to various extends during the earthquake disaster in 17 August 1999. The earthquake has been most severely felt in the area between Gölyaka and Karamürsel due to the ground motions occurred at the west end of North Anatolian Fault. Comparatively high population and dense housing in this region have increased the degree of disaster when previous earthquakes are in concern. Many of the buildings in this area, which under normal conditions would be effected light to medium levels, have been severely damaged causing loss of many lives and national wealth. This picture shows that mistakes in construction industry are still going on. The objective of this study is to draw attention to defective building construction and to the conditions of the existing buildings, with regards to damages after the earthquake. The damages observed in the earthquake area have been classified according to the defects in supporting system design and element design. These building damages have been documented by pictures taken. Incorrect applications, such as poor workmanship, insufficient material, incorrect design and installation, etc. have been explained showing how they should have been done according to our current building code. At last chapter, steel corrosion has been studied. Corrosion mechanism has been explained and factors effecting corrosion have been listed. Henceforth, the role of steel in concrete as reinforcement material has been taken into consideration. Corrosion of reinforcement steel has been studied and damages it has caused have been documented. An inspection to find out the results of these damages at Istanbul University, Pharmacology Faculty building, which was damaged during the earthquake of 17.08.1999, has been carried out using visual inspection and measurement methods. With respect to this inspection, effective cross section of corroded reinforced concrete columns has been determined and changes in capacity after the earthquake have been analysed according to ultimate state. Key Words : Earthquake, design, damage, workmanship, steel reinforcement, corrosion. XI
