Abstract
In this thesis, space perceptions of children are examined in real and virtual game environments. The users of virtual spaces are same with the users of real spaces and children constitute a special user group. Children get acquainted with spaces by means of their perceptions in early ages. The objective of the thesis is to examine and find out computer effects at children?s space perceptions.Thesis includes six chapters. The first chapter is introduction part. In this part, some comprehensive information about the objective, scope and method of the thesis is given. The second chapter covers the perception concept and related theories and examines the concept in a theoretical framework. In this chapter, cognitive development of children and cognitive way of thinking adopted by children are reflected in the framework of Piaget?s (who researchs children?s perceptions and psychology in all of his life) perception theory; and children?s perceptional-cognitive development stages are analyzed, as well.In the third chapter, the concept of space is explained and spatial reading parameters are examined. The concept of virtual, virtual reality, constitution and perception of virtual spaces is investigated. After relating the concepts of virtual and real spaces, children?s perception of virtual and real spaces is scrutinized. In the fourth chapter, children?s perception of `virtuality? is dealt with taking the concepts of game and the interaction between computer and children into account. The role and importance of game in children?s development is questioned and the impact of game on children?s imagination and creativity is analyzed by means of examples. The impact of computer on the development of children?s creativity is also examined. Moreover, the role of computer on perceptional and social behavior of children and its effect on education is also investigated. Computer games is one of the virtual means by which children interact with computer; the impact of computer games on children?s perception and development as well as their perception of space in computer games is investigated. In chapter five, a case study including fifteen children who are in ?concrete operational period? is carried out in order to evaluate the children?s perception of spaces by means of real and virtual game environments. According to children?s psychology, an academic survey has been arranged and applied by the help of an Education Scientist in order to determine the children to participate in the study. Survey results are evaluated and presented in percentages. During the application of the study, children are told to establish Lego games within real and virtual environments using their imagination. Studies are analyzed in comparison to each other and revaluated by tables. The problem of the thesis is scrutinized in this chapter. In the last part, the results of the thesis are presented. In the last part, the results of the entire thesis are presented and revaluated by means of tables.
