Abstract
Dyestuffs are widely used to colorize and strengthen the products against environmental conditions. The extensive use of dyes causes several environmental problems in the ecosystem. The treatment of wastewaters containing dyestuffs is highly difficult and it needs special advanced treatment technologies. It is known that adsorption is one of the methods commonly and efficiently used for treatment of this type of wastewaters. In this study, the removal of methylene blue (MB) dye from aqueous solutions by activated carbon prepared from chestnut shells was investigated. The effects of various parameters such as contact time, temperature, pH and initial methylene blue concentration were examined and the optimal experimental conditions were determined. Equilibrium data were fitted to Freundlich, Langmuir, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms. It was observed that Freundlich isotherm fitted better to the equilibrium data than the other isotherms. The adsorption kinetics was found to follow the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Various thermodynamic parameters such as standart enthalpy, standart entropy and standart free energy change were evaluated. The SEM and FTIR images of the adsorbent obtained before and after adsorption were compared. The results of this study indicated that the activated carbon prepared from chestnut shells was a good adsorbent for removing methylene blue.
