Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the treatability of anodized plating wastewater by chemical precipitation and membrane distillation (MD) technique. The wastewater was collected from an anodic plating company located on the European side of Istanbul. Acidic and basic characteristic wastewaters are formed in the plant, and these wastewaters are mixed and treated in the plant. In this study, acidic, basic and mixed wastewaters were collected and used as feed solutions. These wastewaters are rich in parameters such as sulphate, COD, conductivity and aluminium which were considerably higher than discharge standards. In the study, the sulphate precipitation performance of CaCO3, NaOH and Ca(OH)2 chemicals from the wastewater with high acidic properties was investigated. In chemical precipitation, chemical consumption, sludge volume, sludge disposal and cost were considered and NaOH was determined to be the most suitable chemical. Both mixed wastewater and the acidic wastewater after chemical precipitation have been treated by MD. PTFE and PVDF membranes were used in the membrane distillation process. The treatment of mixed and acidic waste water with membrane distillation using PTFE membranes resulted to the removal efficiencies of COD, iron and TOC above 83.3%, 90.3% and 86.1%, respectively, while the removal efficiencies of sulphate, conductivity and aluminium approached 100% in both wastewaters. The precipitation experiments with Jar tests showed that none of the chemicals used reduced the sulfate values in the wastewater to below the discharge limit value. The results show that the treatment of aluminum anodized coating wastewater by MD process is promising. However, in order to treat the high acidity wastewater with MD, the pH of the wastewater should be increased with a pre-treatment such as precipitation. Post-MD treatment results provided the prescribed discharge standards in the Water Pollution Control Regulation.
