Removal of heavy metals by ferritisation

Abstract

Heavy metals exist In both industrial and domestic wastewaters. Especially highconcentrations of heavy metals are present in industrial wastewaters, mostly as a result of metalplating and processing operations. When the concentrations of heavy metals are above certain limits,they have toxic effects on humans and the natural life so the concentrations of heavy metals inwastewaters must be reduced to acceptable levels stated by the regulations.There are various methods to remove heavy metals from wastewaters and removal of heavymetals from wastewaters is a very important step in the treatment of industrial waste discharges.In this study, ferritisation technique was applied first on synthetic wastewaters and then onactual industrial wastewater, to investigate the optimum conditions providing efficient removal ofheavy metals from wastewaters. From the data obtained, it was found that, heavy metalconcentrations in wastewaters can be reduced to very low levels by applying ferritisation technique.
