N OF SEQUENCING BATCH REACTORS TO TEXTILE DYEING WASTEWATERS ElifKadıoğlu Master of Science in Environmental Technology, 1 995 Advisor: Assoc. Prof. Nilsun İnce Keywords: Textile wastewater, activated sludge, SBR, foaming, Nocardioforms. ABSTRACT The substitution of activated sludge systems for conventional chemical/physical treatment of textile dyeing wastewaters has gained increasing popularity during the last decade. The advantages are that activated sludge systems are incomparably inexpensive and easier to operate once the control parameters are well maintained. This study was based on the investigation of the applicability and troubleshooting of sequencing batch reactors (SBR) on textile dyeing wastewaters. The experimental part of the study was carried out at the treatment plant of PISA textile dyeing industry. The treatment plant consisted mainly of a sequencing batch reactor, which was hardly maintained due to a consistent brown foam on the surface layers of the aeration basin. The majority of this study was concentrated on the determination of the causes and consequences of this foam, followed by the seeking out of remedial means using a pilot-scale plant, operated at exactly same conditions as the full-scale one. After determination of the problem and causes of foaming, a study of remediation was carried out on a pilot scale SBR, the operational mode and control parameters of which were maintained similar to those of full-scale.en_US
