Abstract
111 THERMODYNAMICS OF MARTENSITIC TRANSFORMATIONS IN SHAPE MEMORY ALLOYS (M.Sc. Thesis) Zekayi SÖNMEZ GAZİ UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY June, 1991 ABSTRACT In this work, thermodynamic properties of the thermoelastic martensitic transformations are studied. For this reason, a fundamental thermodynamic equation is derived. The equation describes the mutual equilibrium between the two phases at every temperature and applied stress. The difference in Gibbs-free energy between the two phases gives the driving force of the transformation. The difference depends on the temperature of the specimen and on the level of applied strees. The other free energies of the two phases are very similar. In addition, a general description of a work performing cycle of a Cu-Zn-Al crystal, which shows both the shape memory effect and the reversible shape memory effect is given. This work cycle is limited by two isotherms (T (a) and T (o)) and the performance is o o found. The results are compared with those of other authors. IV
