Abstract
Thesis) Senayi DÖNMEZ GAZİ UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY November 1997 ABSTRACT In this study, governing differantiai equations for velocity, temperature and density distributions in a sidearm of a cooling lake admiring hot water from a nucleer or thermal power station were derived. Models related to momentum and heat transfer coefficients were suggested. The governing equations were reduced to ordinary differential equations and solved numerically by employing Runge- Kutta technique. The effect of the bottom slope on the distributions of velocity and temperature was investigated. Theoratical and experimental results were compared (the agreement is acceptably good ). Discharge in the sidearm, the heat loss from the sidearm due to surface cooling and the calculation of neccessary sidearm length were presented.
