Abstract
It is tried to determine the active adsorbent (among the various adsorbent) in preliminary experiment by using batch system. In order to achieve this goal the solutions whose all properties such as pH, temperature, concentration are the identical were prepared and the equal amount of sepiolite, active carbon, clinoptilolite, oac volania, diatomoceous earth were put in sample solutions. Under the light of the knowledge gained from the preliminary experiments, it was determined that active carbon and sepiolite are more effective than others. In order to determine the effect of concentration, pH, temperature and liquid flow rate on adsorption efficiency, a group of experiment were carried out for both of the adsorbents at two different pH, three different temperatures, three different concentration and three different liquid flow rates. Furthermore, in order to determine the effect of packing height and particle size on adsorption capacity, a number of experiment were performed at three different packing heights and three different particle sizes by using sepiolite keeping the allIV other parameters as constant. In all experiments, the samples taken from the outlet of the column were analyzed according to TS 5945 (a titrimetric method) in order to determine the cyanide concentration and experiments were stopped when adsorbent saturated with cyanide. Adsorption capacities of the packing materials were determined by measuring cyanide concentration in solution at the inlet and outlet of the column and obtained values were plotted as a function of time for different operating conditions. A model was developed for sepiolite and active carbon to determine the adsorption capacity as a function of operations and the results were compared in various respects. As a result it was found that active carbon is a better adsorbent than a nature clay mineral, sepiolite while sepiolite shows high adsorption capacity close to that active carbon.
