Abstract
Thesis) Mutlu SÜMER GAZİ UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY January 1999 ABSTRACT In this study, the effects of ethanol and varied ethanoi gasoline mixtures, which are alternative fuels, on engine performance and exhaust emissions and their adaptability have been investigated experimentally. A four stroke, single cylinder petrol engine was used for experiments. Ethanol and gasoline have not been mixtured, because of the phase separation. Also, the engine has not been operated with pure ethanol, as the fuel, which conducts in the cylinders, a cycle, has not been enought. Two carburators have been used in order to prevent the phase separation of ethanol and gasoline mixtures. It has been observed that, pure ethanol operations performance values were quite low comparing to the petrol engine operations and results were becoming better while increasing the amount of petroi in the mixture. When the percentage of ethanol in mixture was increased, CO emissions were decreased and minimum CO emissions were obtained from pure ethanol operating. In contrast, HC emissions was reached the maximum value, under pure ethanol operating. The lower the percentage of ethanol in mixture, the lower the HC emissions was obtained. Experimental results show that, this dual fuel system can be adapted with simple changings in the carburator structure.
