Abstract
Dr. Atilla MURATHAN Ill ADSORPTION OF ZINC IN WASTEWATER BY USING PACKED COLUMNS (M. Sc Thesis) Ahmet Yavuz YUCEKUTLU GAZI UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY September 1999 ABSTRACT Heavy metal loading into the rivers has increased substantially along with the technological development. The discharge of industrial wastewaters contaminated with heavy metals into receiving water media without treatment causes accumulation in aquatic organisms, in turn enters the food chain and consequently harms the human health. Heavy metals in the wastewater also affect negatively the yield of microorganisms used in biological treatment processes and decrease the treatment efficiency. Different methods are used in order to eliminate the heavy metal pollution. Adsorption is a relatively new method used for removal of heavy metals from wastewaters. Zinc is one of the most frequently encountered found heavy metal in industrial wastewaters and receiving media. Although it is an essential element for living organisms, considerable amounts in waters deteriotes the water quality and causes negative impacts on living organisms.IV In this study, the experiments carried out in packed columns the adsorption of zinc was investigated by using zinc as heavy metal, and beige and brown sepiolit, horse chessnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) and valonia acron (Quercus ihaburensunsis Decne Subsp. Macrolepis Hedge-Yalt) as adsorbent materials, and the effects of pH, temperature, solution concentration, solution flow rate, column diameter and bed depth on adsorption were also investigated. As a result of mis study, adsorption capacities of hors chessnut, brown and beige sepiolites and valonia acron were determined as 15,84 mg zinc/g adsorbent, 8,78 mg zinc/g adsorbent depending on the experimental conditions 9,81 mg zinc/g adsorbent to 58,5 mg zinc/g adsorbent and 69,4 mg zinc/g adsorbent respectively.
