Abstract
89 Prof.Dr. Senay TAŞCIOĞLU Ill OPTIMIZATION OF MICELLAR ENHANCED ULTRAFILTRATION FOR THE SEPARATION OF Pb(ll) (M.Sc.Thesis) Okan TAŞ GAZI UNIVERSITY September 2003 ABSTRACT In this study, the optimum conditions have been investigated for the separation of Pb2+ ions from aqueous media by micellar enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) in order to utilize in the removal of Pb2+ ions in industrial waste streams. In the first stage of the study, optimum conditions for the concentration of surface active agent in the feed solution (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS), filtering pressure, stirring rate and for the membrane porosity have been determined. The optimum pH for the feed solution have been determined by performing MEUF at different pH's and a retention factor (R) for Pb2+ about 100% could be attained at pH's 6 and 7. SDS has been found to be effective in the Pb2+ separation at pH=6 though the formation of lead hydroxides at pH's higher than 5, and it has been demonstrated that Pb2+ ions can be almost completely removed from aqueous media at pH=6 in the presence of SDS at quite low concentrations. In the second stage of the study; the effect of the complexation of Pb2+ with dithizone (DZ) on the R values, depending on the pH of the medium, has been investigated and it has been observed that the presence of DZ in the feed solution enhances the separation of Pb2+ at pH's 3 and 5. A waste stream sample from a battery plant has been subjected to MDUF process in the optimum conditions determined in this study, and it has been shown that Pb2+ ions in a waste stream can be removed by MEUF effectively.IV Science code Key Word Page number Adviser 405.04.01 Micellar Enhanced Ultrafiltration, SDS, Lead, Dithizone. 89 Prof.Dr. Senay TAŞCIO?LU
