Abstract
Biofouling is a process of bacteria, algae and mussels adhering to artificial surfaces in aquatic media. Antifouling biocides are used to prevent their accumulation. Tributyltin (TBT) has been developed as antifouling agent during the 1960s, however restrictions and finally ban was enforced due to high impact on aquatic organisms. Less toxic antifouling paints have been developed as alternatives to TBT. Zinc pyrithione is one of these alternatives. Ecotoxicologic effects of zinc pyrtihione has been studied on two freshwater mussel species (Dreissena polymorpha, Unio mancus eucirrus) in the present investigation. Acute 24, 48 and 72 h LC50 values to Dreissena polymorpha have been found as 30,30; 23,63 and 11,5 µg/L, respectively. Unio mancus eucirrus species were exposed to 5 µg/L sub-lethal zinc pyrithione for 96 h and total hemocyte counts were found to increase 2.27 fold with respect to controls (p < 0.001). Exposed group (experimental group) MDA (gill p < 0.05; digestive gland p < 0.05), GSH (gill p < 0.01; digestive gland p < 0.05) and total protein (gill p > 0,05; digestive gland p > 0,05) levels increased significantly in gill and digestive gland tissues when compared to control group. In conclusion, zinc pyrithione has acute toxicity to Dreissena polymorpha and also toxic at acute sub-lethal exposure to Unio mancus eucirrus.
