Değişken yazı tipi (Variable fonts) teknolojisinin araştırılması ve bu araştırmaya dayalı bir değişken yazı tipi tasarımı

Abstract

Yazının tarihi eski çağlara dayanmaktadır fakat yazının en temel öğesi olan harflerin biçimsel değişiminin o kadar eski olmadığı görülmektedir. Bu değişim, harflerin sadece el yazısında olmaktan çıkıp standart bir sistem üzerine kurulması ve kendine ayrı bir alan oluşturmasını sağlayan matbaa ile başlamıştır. Harflerin ölçülendirilmesi ve belli karakteristik özelliklere kavuşması da yine bu dönemde ortaya çıkmaktadır. Mimarinin ve sanat akımlarının getirdiği değişimler, yazı karakterlerinde de artışa neden olmuştur. Bu artış yazıyı belli bir sınıflandırma içine alarak, onu farklı düşünce ve fikirler etrafında tanımlama gereksinimi de beraberinde getirmiştir. Yazının çoğaltılması için yapılan çalışmalar, kağıdın, mürekkebin kullanımı ve kullanılan baskı kalıplarına oyulması ya da saklanması gibi birçok zorluk ile karşılaştığından dolayı bu işlemleri basitleştirme kaygılarına da yol açmaktadır. Bu kaygılar, Modernizim ve devamında gelen Postmodernist düşünce ile font tasarımcılarını farklı arayışlara yöneltmiştir. Özellikle, bu çalışmanın da konusunu oluşturan değişken fontlar bu arayışa cevap vermektedir ve font tasarımcıları açısından önemli bir yere sahiptir. Başlangıçta değişken fontlar, bilgisayarlar aracılığı ile tipografi öğelerini sayısallaştırma çalışmalarına başlayan bilgisayar mühendisleri ve yazılımcılar tarafından geliştirilmiştir. Devam eden süreçte font tasarımcıları tarafından da ele alınarak yeni tasarımlar meydana getirilmiştir. Teknolojinin hızlı gelişimi tasarımcının ulaşabileceği ve kullanabileceği araçların da gelişimine katkı sağlamış, mikro bilgisayarların hayata girmesiyle birlikte harfler artık sadece kâğıt üzerinde değil, ekran üzerinde de belirli bir tasarım düşüncesi ile tasarlanmaya ve geliştirilmeye başlanmıştır. Bu çalışmada değişken font tasarımı gerçekletirilerek bu yeni teknolojinin sunduğu imkanların incelenmesi ve denenmesi için bir örnek oluşturulması amaçlanmıştır.

The history of type is based on ancient times however it is seen that the formal change of letters, which are the most fundamental elements of type, is not that old. This change has started with printing press that enabled the letters to leave being handwriting and to be established on a standard system, and to create a separate area. The dimensioning of the letters and the acquisition of certain characteristic features were also emerged in this period. The changes introduced by the architecture and the art movements has been caused an increase in the characters of type. This increase has brought the identification requirement around different thoughts and ideas by including a certain classification of the type. Studies for the reproduction of the type encountered with many different difficulties, such as using paper, ink, and carving or storing printing molds, therefore these difficulties lead to the concerns of simplification of these processes. These concerns led the font designers to search for different quests with Modernism and the following Postmodernist thought.Remarkably, the variable fonts that comprise the subject of this study, respond to this search and have a significant place in terms of font designers.Initially, variable fonts were developed by computer engineers and software developers who started the digitization of typography elements through computers.In the ongoing process, the new designs were created by handling of font designers. The rapid development of technology has contributed to the development of the tools that the designer can reach and use, and with the introduction of microcomputers, the letters are now designed and developed not only on paper but also on the screen with a certain design idea. In this study, it is intended to create a sample for examining and testing the offered possibilities of this new technology by implementing variable font design.
