Abstract
Influenced by transformative Western ideas, social and political issues evolved into an identity problem during the last century of the Ottoman Empire. Particularly the disruptive effect of the Balkan wars precluded the newly created `Ottoman Nation` perception, and entailed an understanding of the state shaped through the national identity consciousness. Though the Ottoman state organization that embraced different identities as a principal sought a solution to the problem with a reformist approach and by pursuing its traditional political style, the conjuncture did not allow. The construction processes of national identities brought about the reorganization of the entire Ottoman social identity. Novel as the most functional tool of socialization foci during the 19th century stood out in this context. The Tanzimat novel is one of the most significant witnesses to follow the footprints of the modernization process. It also enables one to trace the effect of identity discussions on the social and political life. Novel developed as a political-social agent conscious of the ethnic diversity in the Ottoman Empire. Though one can argue to what extent it could be used as a means of political organization, novel as a new form helped shape new ethnic identity perceptions. It is very important for Turks and Armenians forming a cultural life for centuries in Ottoman society from this perspective that reveals new identity consciousness of the perception. In this study, the identity problem within context of ethnic, religious, intellectual and gender identity in Ottoman society is analyzed through certain Turkish novels in Armenian and Arabic scripts and examined the relationship between different layers of identity and literature.
