Abstract
In this study, two different gels have been synthesized from N-vinylcaprolactam and dodesyl methacrylate and separation of {n-heptane + toluene} binary system by these gels have been investigated. In literature, solvent extraction has been used to separate toluene from aliphatic hydrocarbons. In this study gel extraction has been used to separate toluene from n-heptane.The first step of this study includes the structural characterization of synthesized gels using FT-IR, and thermal characterization using thermal gravimetric analysis. The second step is that swelling behaviors of the synthesized gels in solvent/solvent mixtures have been investigated, swelling ratios have been calculated and concluded whether swelling behavior is Fickian or non-Fickian.In the last step effects of gels have been investigated taking into consideration various parameters such as initial toluene concentration in a binary mixture, gel/toluene mass ratio, separation factor. The experimental results were correlated using Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms. Also kinetic results have been correlated using some kinetic models such as pseudo first order, second order models and Weber-Morris diffusion model.
