Abstract
In automotive industry, LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) and CNG (compressed natural gas) are nowadays more preferable than gasoline and diesel fuel in terms of both environmental factors and economic reasons. The amount of wear that occurs on valve guides and valve seats when CNG or LPG is used, is more than the amount of wear that occurs when gasoline or diesel fuel is used in internal combustion engines. Therefore, it is crucial to improve mechanical properties and especially wear resistance of the steels for automotive valve guides and seats. In this study, with certain heat treatments (i.e. spheroidization, quenching and tempering), the changes in mechanical properties and wear resistance were examined for the steel manufactured for the valve guides and seats of gasoline or diesel engines, and for the steel manufactured for the valve guides and seats of LPG or CNG engines. Accordingly, for the steels each of which was individually subjected to one or multiple heat treatments, metallographic examinations were carried out, changes in hardness depending on heat treatment were measured, and different mechanical properties were determined by carrying out tensile and impact tests. Thereafter, two-body abrasive wear tests were carried out on the different heat-treated steels, and the wear behaviors of them were determined by evaluating wear resistance. Ultimately, it is found that optimal mechanical properties can be obtained for the both types of the steels by means of spheroidization.
