Abstract
SUMMARY Preliminary diagnosis of oral and perioral disorders increases the effectiveness of the treatment. Biopsy is one of the accurate procedures in reaching the diagnosis. Fine needle aspiration biopsy method is the insertion of a fine needle into the lesion and examination of the vacuum-aspirated by light microscopy. The role of fine needle aspiration biopsy in the initial evaluation of neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions has increased rapidly. However, utilization on the oro-maxillofacial region seems to have been neglected. The aim of this study is evaluation of the diagnostic value and accuracy of fine needle aspiration biopsy by comparing the results of final open histologic examination with the preliminary cytologic examination In the study, 107 fine needle aspiration biopsy and 97 open biopsy samples were obtained from 101 patients. Seventy eight benign lesions and 10 malignant lesions were studied. Specific cytologic diagnosis was 61reported on 57 cases. In 19 cases the aspirated material was insufficient for diagnosis. The specificity of fine needle aspiration biopsy was 99 %, the sensitivity was 99.1 % and the accuracy was 99 %. In conclusion, fine needle aspiration biopsy is a safe, rapid, reliable, cost-effective and easy to perform procedure. The overall accuracy of the fine needle aspiration biopsy is high and not significantly different from those obtained in other regions of the body. This procedure is particularly effective for differentiating benign and malignant lesions. 62
